Information for teachers employed from overseas

Immigration

If you are a secondary school teacher anywhere in the world seeking new opportunities with Westlake Boys High School in Auckland, New Zealand, we can help.

New Zealand is a great destination for teachers from across the world. School teachers are on Tier 2 of the Green List – job roles that are highly in demand in New Zealand. This qualifies teachers for residence after 2 years of working in the country and arriving here on an Accredited Employer Work Visa for 5 years (starting from 27 November 2023).

However, certain requirements must be met before teachers can start teaching and accumulating work experience. These include:

  • Registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand
  • A provisional practising certificate issued by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

In a nutshell, what this means is:

After you meet all the requisites and are offered a job with Westlake Boys High School, you will need to apply for your Teaching Council registration to obtain a provisional certificate. Then, we will apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) for you. This will be valid for 5 years – enough time for you to gather the 2 years of work experience needed for your residence application.

Moreover, you can bring along your spouse and children on the AEWV visa. Your spouse can get an open work visa for the duration of your AEWV, and your children can attend school on a Dependent Student visa. If your children have completed their schooling and are at a tertiary education level, then they will need to pay the international student fee for their university/tertiary education in New Zealand.

If this sounds promising and you would like to know how to get the process started, we at Aims Global are more than happy to lend a hand.

We partner with Westlake Boys High School to assist their overseas teachers transition smoothly into New Zealand and provide immigration assistance to them and their family. We are a team of licensed immigration advisers with over 40 years of combined experience, making us well-versed in the ins and outs of New Zealand immigration. We will assist you in securing visas for you and your family members, ensuring you have a hassle-free journey to New Zealand.

Training and working with us

Deciding to leave your current career and embark on a new one is a big decision – particularly when you factor in re-training in your chosen new field. This leap of faith has been made easier for those wanting to train as a teacher thanks to the Auckland Schools’ Teacher Trainee Programme (ASTTP). The ASTTP offers a brilliant solution for new graduates and career changers – onsite teacher training at a local high school with your university fees paid for and a $12,500 stipend paid to you while you train.

David Ferguson, Headmaster of Westlake Boys’ High School says, "This programme offers a pathway for people who have always considered teaching as a career possibility but weren’t sure how they could make the move. We're really interested in people who have worked in other jobs and are looking to change careers, as well as graduates from a wide range of disciplines”.

Sixty teacher trainees, aged from the mid-20s to over 50, are enrolled this year, with 24 participating Auckland schools offering this programme. The ASTTP model gives teacher trainees the advantage of training on-the-job, alongside outstanding teachers and mentors, giving them first-hand experience of all school life. While training, they complete their Graduate or Post Graduate teachers diploma course online through the University of Waikato. Our teacher trainees can also attend and participate in a dozen professional learning workshops at twelve different schools throughout Auckland.
